Alyssa & John

Alyssa & John

Like two ships passing in the night, we swiped right and met on Tinder in 2015. However unromantic meeting through an app may be, our first date still set the tone for romance. We drove to scenic Kent Falls in my PT Cruiser (the kind with wood panels — it’s really quite a looker) and after a short hike, split a pizza at a local shop and ended the night listening to a Beatles cover album.

Fast forward to October 2018 – unbeknownst to me, John contacted Micheal's Jewelers to see what could be done to rectify his late grandmother's ring. Upon further inspection by one of their talented gemologists, the initials MK were found inscribed on the setting. It turns out that the beautiful art deco style ring was handmade by none other than, Michaels Jewelers and dates back to around the 1940s. Not only is this ring a unique family heirloom, but it was constructed by the very same Connecticut jewelers who were able to give it a new life, nearly 80 years later. John worked with Michaels Jewelers to get the ring fit with a new band, polished off with a diamond that his mom gifted and etched with my nickname.

A few months later on December 8th we headed to Vermont for a week long getaway, which started off with our friend’s wedding in Manchester. John had every intention of proposing to me the following morning, however, I had been fishing that night to see what his intentions were. Naturally, I became upset when he confidently said he had not started to shop around. Shortly thereafter, the song “Respect” came on, so I jumped on the dance floor and sang it to him with conviction. So subtle, I know. However, he had me fooled — he had been carrying the ring in his pocket the entire time! With that, John decided it was better to ask sooner than later.

After the reception concluded, we went back to the room so he could get his jacket before going back out for a night cap. I reluctantly went with him and was still on my soap box, when before I knew it, he got down on one knee. He laughed and said that he had always been a step ahead of me. When he asked me to marry him, I first yelled, “what the heck are you doing!?” because he really blindsided me. I quickly followed up with successive “yeses” and the night ended with a bottle of champagne complimentary of the hotel!

As two native nutmeggers, we are so excited that Michaels Jewelers is a part of our story. We've had many dates since our first, but are most excited about, December 1st when we commit to a lifetime together.
